A smart controller lets you check the door from your phone, close it if you forgot, and get a note when it opens. We set the hardware up, connect it to your network, and make sure the safety sensors still take priority over any app.

From the shop

Open, close, repeat, for years.

Extension springs, the long springs that run beside the horizontal tracks, are common on older doors. We replace them in pairs, matched to the door weight, and always with safety cables threaded through them so a break stays contained. Where the setup allows, we can also talk through converting to a torsion system.

Repairs

Repair & Maintenance

Doors wear from the bottom up. The seal along the floor hardens, the lowest rollers pick up grit, and the bottom brackets take the salt.

Springs & Hardware

Winding a torsion spring is not a job for a ladder and a screwdriver. It takes proper bars, a secured door and a technician who knows how many turns the door wants.

  1. Steel and nylon garage-door rollers with long stems lie beside a detached hinge on a workbench. — Garage Door Roller Replacement, Hamilton
Garage Door Roller ReplacementThe door shudders as it rises, worst where the track bends from vertical to horizontal. Watching from inside, you can see one section rock from side to side while the others sit still, and the whole door lands with a…
  2. Gloved hands holding two metal garage-door hinges side by side, one discolored with a visible crack and the other bright silver. — Garage Door Hinge Replacement, Hamilton
Garage Door Hinge ReplacementThe car nudged the door on the way in. There is a dent low on one end, and above it the hinge that carries the roller is bent so the panel edges rub together and squeal as the door lifts.
  3. Gloved hands holding a vertical garage-door track and a wrench at its mounting bracket beside a door hinge. — Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement, Hamilton
Garage Door Track Repair or ReplacementThe horizontal rail toward the back of the garage sags noticeably. The hanger that once held it to the ceiling swings on a single screw, and the open door drifts back down a few inches.
  4. Two coiled steel cables with loop and stop ends on a workbench. — Garage Door Cable Replacement, Hamilton
Garage Door Cable ReplacementThe car bumper kissed the door on the way in. The bottom panel has a dent, the bracket in that corner sits crooked, and the cable on that side has jumped and gone slack, so the door reverses every time it tries to close.
  5. Detached black coil spring with metal end fittings on a workbench. — Torsion Spring Replacement, Hamilton
Torsion Spring ReplacementLooking up at the coil above the door, you can see a clean split with a gap of several centimetres between the two halves. The rest of the spring looks fine, but the door has become almost impossible to move by hand.
  6. Two coiled extension springs with looped ends, two black pulleys and a loop of steel cable on a worn wooden workbench. — Extension Spring Replacement, Hamilton

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

The motor runs, the chain rattles along the rail, and the door does not move a millimetre. You notice the little carriage sliding back and forth on its own. Last week the power was out and someone pulled the red cord to get the car out.

How a visit goes

An opener is only half of the machine. The other half is the door: springs balanced so the door weighs almost nothing in your hand, rollers turning in a straight track, hinges holding the panels square.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Booking made simple

One call sets the visit. We ask for the door type, the opener if you know it, and whether the door is currently stuck open or shut.

  2. 2 of 3

    A careful look

Every visit opens with a full check: balance, spring condition, cable wear, roller state, track alignment and sensor response.

  3. 3 of 3

    Clear choices, careful work

We lay out the options in plain terms, do what you choose with the right tools, and run the door until we are satisfied it is right.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 61%Older homes

About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older garages are frequently used as workshops or storage as much as parking, which means the door opens many times a day and collects dust on the sensors. Sealed rollers, protected photo-eyes and a tune-up schedule suit that pattern well.

  • 56%

Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the doors are mixed as well: wide insulated doubles, narrow singles in rows and the occasional rolling door on a small commercial unit at the corner. Spring type, cable length and opener strength are matched to each door individually.

My opener has no photo eyes. Can it be kept in service?

Openers without an external sensor date from before 1993, when photo eyes or an equivalent device became part of the operator standard. The door industry's own inspection checklist and consumer safety regulators both recommend replacing such units rather than repairing them, because the contact-reversal feature alone is a weaker protection for anyone or anything under the door. A diagnosis on one of these units usually ends with a replacement recommendation, explained plainly.

Should I lubricate the chain, the rail or the track?

Rollers, hinges, bearings and springs benefit from a garage door lubricant once or twice a year. The chain, belt or screw-drive rail is a separate question, since each drive type calls for its own product and schedule from the opener's manual rather than one rule for every unit. The track itself should stay clean and dry, because lubricant there collects grit and makes rollers slide instead of turning. The technician can point out the spots on your door at the end of the visit.

My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?

Short range is almost always interference or a weak signal, not a broken opener. Certain LED bulbs, including ones fitted in the opener's own sockets, emit noise on the frequency remotes use. A remote battery near the end of its life also loses reach before it fails outright. The technician tests range with a known-good remote, swaps bulbs, checks the antenna wire hangs free below the head unit, and replaces the battery or remote as needed.

Why is my door sitting crooked since the spring broke?

On a two-spring door, one intact spring keeps pulling on its side while the broken side goes slack, so the door lifts unevenly and a cable can jump its drum. The technician levels the door, reseats the cables in their drum grooves and evens the tension after the new spring is fitted. Rollers and track are checked for damage from the crooked travel so the door runs square again.

What do the small lights on the sensors mean?

Arrangement varies by model: most pairs carry an indicator on each side, in differing colours for sender and receiver, though some older pairs light only the receiver, so check the maker's chart. A receiving light that is dark or flickering means the beam is not landing on it, so the pair needs aligning or something is in the way. Both lights dark means the pair has no power, which points to the wire or the terminals at the head unit. Steady lights on both sides mean a healthy system.
