Garage Door Hinge Replacement

The car nudged the door on the way in. There is a dent low on one end, and above it the hinge that carries the roller is bent so the panel edges rub together and squeal as the door lifts.

Garage Door Hinge Replacement

In plain words

Hinges come in different thicknesses, and the visit is a chance to fit the right one. Steel gauge runs backwards: a larger number means thinner metal, so an 18-gauge hinge suits a light single door while 14-gauge is the heavier residential standard and 11-gauge is commercial stock. A heavy insulated double door, a door used many times a day, or a door whose hinges keep cracking at the knuckle benefits from moving up a gauge. The technician also checks that the hinge width and hole pattern match the door's stiles, since patterns vary between makers. You leave with hinges suited to the door's weight.

Sound familiar?

Watching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling, then close again. The other side stays tight.

How the visit goes

How the visit goes

  1. Reading the number on each edge hinge

Every edge hinge carries a stamped number, and the technician reads it rather than assuming. A 1 sits at the joint above the bottom panel, a 2 at the next joint up, then 3, with 4 and 5 appearing on taller doors. The number sets how far the roller stands off the door, so the door leans into the jambs when closed and follows the track as it climbs. An earlier repair sometimes leaves a 2 where a 3 belongs, and that door binds or gaps at the curve for years without anyone knowing why. Confirming the number on each joint, and correcting any that are wrong, is part of the first look.

  2. Changing an edge hinge with its roller

An edge hinge holds the roller in the track, so the roller comes with it. The technician steadies the panel with a clamp, backs out the hinge screws, then eases the roller stem out of the hinge tube while tilting the wheel clear of the track, or loosens a track bracket a fraction to make room. The old hinge comes off, the new one of the same number goes on with the roller stem seated in its tube, the wheel is guided back into the track, and the hinge is fastened. Both edge hinges on a joint are handled this way, one after the other, with the panel alignment rechecked between them.

  3. The balance test you can do yourself

You can confirm the door is balanced without touching a spring. With the door closed, pull the opener's release cord, lift the door by its handle to about waist height and let go gently. It should stay roughly where it is. A door that sinks or climbs on its own is telling you the springs are out of step with the door's weight, and a door dragged by the opener is what wears hinges early, so book an adjustment. Reconnect the opener the way its manual describes, usually by running it once. Doing this each season keeps both the hinges and the opener working lightly.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Supporting the panel while hinges are changed

A heavy insulated panel needs to be braced while its hinges are off, so it does not sag or twist out of place mid-repair. Lighter steel or wood panels usually need no extra support, and the technician decides which applies once the panel is in front of them.

  2. 2Steel, wood or insulated door

A wood door takes different fasteners and often needs timber repaired around the holes; a heavy insulated door may need a heavier hinge. Construction shapes both the parts and the time.

  3. 3Gauge and grade of the replacement

Standard 14-gauge hinges are priced differently from heavy 11-gauge parts, and moving a heavy insulated door up a gauge is an upgrade named as its own line in the quote.

Garage Door Hinge Replacement: questions

Why is there a gap opening between two panels as the door goes up?

The two panels at that joint are no longer being held together on one side. A hinge that has cracked through, pulled its screws or lost its pin lets the panels hinge open around the remaining hardware, and the gap shows as they round the curve where the joint flexes most. Replacing the failed hinge, and checking its partner on the other end, brings the panels back into line.

Why did the hinge crack in the first place?

Steel flexed often enough eventually cracks, and several things speed that up. A door out of balance is dragged by the opener, and every hinge takes the strain. A seized roller twists its hinge on each trip. A track out of line pinches the panels at the curve. A wide panel without a strut flexes at the joint. Corrosion at the low hinges thins the steel. The technician looks for which of these was at work so the new hinge is spared the same stress.

Should every hinge be replaced, or only the broken one?

It depends on what the inspection finds. Hinges age at similar rates, so a cracked one is often the first of several, especially on the lower joints where salt and moisture collect. The technician checks each hinge and tells you which are cracked, worn at the pin or bent, which are loose and only need tightening, and which are sound. Replacing the worn group in one visit saves the door a run of separate call-outs.
